What are the Tottori Sand Dunes?
The Tottori Sand Dunes are large dunes located just outside the city and are Tottori’s most famous tourist attraction. Located in the heart of the Sanin Kaigan National Park, it’s one of Japan’s finest coastal sand dunes. They span roughly 16 kilometers of coast along the Sea of Japan and are up to two kilometers wide.
How did they form?
The sand dunes were formed over 100,000 years from sediment deposits from the nearby Chugoku Mountain. The sand flowed down the Sendai River and washed out into the Sea of Japan. Strong sea currents and winds push these sediments back onto the shore to form the sand dunes. Wind and the tides have continued to shift the dunes ever since, making for a landscape that’s never the same.

What can I do there?
If you’re planning a trip to the Tottori dunes, there are plenty of fun things to do and see! Start by visiting the main sightseeing area, where you can enjoy amazing views of the beautiful landscape, including bright blue skies, golden sands, and the endless Sea of Japan.
Next, take a short five-minute ride on the chairlift to the Sakyu Center Observation Deck for a different angle. From there, you’ll get a fantastic panoramic view of the dunes. The Sakyu Center also has a restaurant, a souvenir shop, and a cozy lounge area where you can relax after exploring.
You can also enjoy exciting activities, like riding a camel around the dunes or riding in a horse-drawn cart. If you want more adventure, try sandboarding, paragliding, or hang-gliding! Kids will have a blast too, especially at the Tottori Sakyu Kodomonokuni theme park, which has fun playgrounds to explore.

Are there other sand dunes in Japan?
The Nakatajima dunes are one of Japan’s three largest dune areas, alongside the Tottori Dunes and Kujukuri-hama. They are situated in the southern part of Hamamatsu, in Shizuoka Prefecture. The dunes stretch about four kilometers from east to west and just over half a kilometer from north to south. The wind creates beautiful patterns in the sand known as fumon, making the landscape look like a work of art.
This area is also well-known for loggerhead turtles, which come ashore every spring and summer to lay their eggs. Unlike the Tottori dunes, Nakatajima offers a more peaceful atmosphere. Visitors enjoy kite flying, cooling off in the water, and taking scenic walks for photography.
The Kujukuri-hama Sand Dunes in Chiba are notable for their straight coastline, which is rare in Japan. This unique beach features a 41-mile stretch of sand along the Pacific Ocean. The absence of reefs makes it a perfect spot for water sports, including swimming and surfing. The stunning views created by the Pacific Ocean are some of the most breathtaking in Japan.
